The Power of Communication

Have you ever faced a problem where poor communication was the root issue? This scenario is more common than we might think. Miscommunication affects our interactions at work, with friends, and even with our families.

Managers frequently hold training sessions to reinforce the importance of effective communication. Countless books are written to broaden our understanding of how communication shapes our society.

At our program, we design assignments to help students develop essential skills for success. Every task serves a purpose: to enhance their ability to communicate effectively and engage those around them.

No matter our level of expertise, we all strive to improve our communication skills—to express ourselves clearly and persuasively in every environment we find ourselves in.

The Leadership Journey of Marilyn and Scott Petersen

Marilyn and Scott Petersen understand the significance of communication and much more. Their diverse life experiences have given them a deep understanding of leadership. They recognize that strong leadership happens on a foundation of interconnected skills.

Every great leader’s toolkit must include emotional intelligence, strategic planning, resilience, and other essential qualities. The Petersens know how to cultivate and apply these skills when needed.

The couple serves as full-time missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This year, they celebrate 45 years of marriage and cherish their five children and nineteen grandchildren. Scott, an accomplished author, has written two books on early Christianity and has extensive experience in the corporate world, having worked with major companies.

Lessons of Faith and Leadership

“It was really engaging and thought-provoking.”

“Very emotional. I could feel the spirit; very valuable knowledge.”

These heartfelt words from students capture the impact the Petersens have had on campus. Minaz Neto (Brazil) and Antonella Huapaya (Italy) expressed their gratitude for the couple’s teachings.

Beyond leadership lessons, the Petersens offer a powerful message to young adults:

“When you have God by your side and act accordingly, things start to work out.”

The Prophet Isaiah echoed a similar sentiment in the Old Testament:

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Faith in God, combined with action, elevates students to new heights. The Petersens also encourage them to take time for reflection:

“Live up to the things you have learned—not just hear them.”

By internalizing these teachings, students can make them a lasting part of their lives and identities.

Communication: The Core of Great Leadership

“Great leaders are excellent communicators,” say the Petersens. When asked about the defining traits of strong leaders, they immediately highlight communication as the most crucial skill.

Some may find this surprising, but effective communication is the foundation of leadership. To inspire and guide a team, a leader must clearly and persuasively convey their message. True leadership requires the ability to articulate emotions and ideas in a way that motivates others.

At the heart of every great leader lies the ability to communicate with clarity and purpose.

Strong leaders not only know what to say but also how to say it. The Petersens emphasize that these skills are not exclusive to a select few—they can be developed by anyone willing to learn.

“A good leader is someone who helps people see the best in themselves,” they add.

With this vision, the Petersens are committed to shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Judging by the students’ enthusiasm and dedication, the future looks bright.
