Unexpected Connections
In the constantly changing fabric of life, connections form in the most unexpected of ways. For Donn William Mason, this came through a simple Facebook post by Kelly Shepherd that reignited his passion for education and service. Back in 2002, Kelly, an advisor, later became the student life director alongside his wife in 2023. In one of those serendipitous moments, Donn stumbled upon images of Kelly engaging with vibrant young minds across Europe, captioned simply: “Cumorah Academy.” Intrigued, he reached out, eager to learn more about this inspiring institution.
A Mission Founded on Noble Principles
What followed was a captivating journey into a mission founded on noble principles and a shared vision—one that celebrated the power of youth and education. Kelly shared the origins of Cumorah Academy and the transformative impact it sought to create. With renewed vigor, Donn and Cheryl Mason decided without hesitation, “We’re in!” This decision marked the beginning of their dedicated service to the academy and its students.
A Calling to Serve
Cheryl recalls their desire to serve—a calling that blossomed after Donn retired from his career in October. The couple had always yearned for meaningful post-retirement opportunities. With the freedom that retirement afforded, they began to reflect on how they wanted to spend their remaining years, healthy and still capable of making a difference. “We’ve been asking God what he wants us to do,” Cheryl said, a determined glint in her eye. Their grown children, while initially surprised by their lofty ambitions, stood firmly behind them, providing support and love.
Strong Academic Foundations
Donn’s academic foundation laid a strong groundwork for his service journey. With a Bachelor’s in psychology and child development from Southern Utah University and a master’s from Northern Arizona University, he was ready for the road ahead. Their lives led them across the United States, each location adding rich experiences. After eleven years in Kanab, Utah, and another eleven in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Masons found themselves in Atlanta, Georgia.
Behind the Scenes of a Noble Mission
In 2015, Donn transitioned from a role in church education to the Temple Department, becoming a temple recorder. His role, largely behind the scenes, was crucial—ensuring the correctness of ordinances performed in the temple. With reverence, he summed it up: “If we did our jobs well, no one should know about us. Our work allows others to focus on their worship.”
Family at the Heart of Their Journey
Throughout their journeys, the family stood at the heart of their lives. With five remarkable children—four sons and one daughter—Donn and Cheryl fostered a lively household full of love. Their relationship has spanned decades, beginning with a story that felt like a movie plot. After returning from a mission in 1979, Donn pivoted from his planned medical career to education.
A Blossoming Love
Initially, he worked at Godfather’s Pizza, where he met Cheryl. While their first impressions were informal, the connection grew amid bustling pizza orders and movie screenings across the street. Fate played its hand when he was offered a chance to work at the theater, where she handled ticket sales. As the relationship blossomed, both felt the unmistakable presence of something deeper, despite the complications of youth and prior engagements.
Navigating Challenges Together
Over the course of their friendship, the lines between companionship and romance blurred. With challenges, including familial doubts and personal fears, the couple leaned on each other for support. Important decisions awaited Donn as he sought divine clarity on his future. It culminated in a heartfelt moment—an honest conversation that turned the tide of their lives.
A Moment that Changed Everything
When Donn offered to drive Cheryl to the airport, their paths would forever change. As they played games in the airport, they deepened their bond, and Cheryl, initially protective of her feelings, began to understand the magnitude of her affections. With guidance from faith and a community that supported their dreams, they married shortly after Cheryl turned 19, marking the beginning of a new chapter together—forty years of partnership by August 2020.
Leading with Love
Now in their roles as campus presidents of Cumorah Academy, the Masons find themselves working towards a higher cause. Each meeting brings new insights and the chance to uplift others. Their responsibilities focus on teaching truth-based principles and providing support where needed, nurturing a culture of learning that extends beyond the classroom.
The Impact of Their Love
The Masons’ impact on their students and the academy community is palpable. As one student, Diana Fernanda Vasquez Sandoval, beautifully stated, “They are amazing; they are like Christ, with the light on their faces.” Another student, Filip Andrei Mocescu, expressed, “You are around them; you feel comfortable. It’s like a breath of fresh air.”
Ellie Earnest captured their spirit perfectly: “Donn and Cheryl are like balls of love and sunshine. They bring such a loving spirit to the campus and make every single student feel important.” To Barbara Bueno, the Masons embody a joyful learning experience: “Whenever I’m with Donn and Cheryl, I learn and have fun. They are always super loving and caring.”
A Lasting Influence
Beyond academics, the Masons foster personal connections. Emily Gregory shared, “I feel that they see the best in me,” while Laudir Rodrigues noted, “I really feel his love for me when they smile.” Brysen simply stated, “They’re super amazing; I love them so much.” Ceasar expressed gratitude for their support, saying, “Thank you for showing me the true meaning of support, friendship, and helping me learn English. I will be forever grateful for everything you have done for me and will always remember you.”
A Journey of Love and Faith
As they reflect on their journey, Donn and Cheryl Mason embody a profound truth: life’s greatest adventures often begin with a single connection, fueled by faith, love, and the desire to make a difference. Their story is not just one of service; it’s a testament to the enduring power of shared dreams and unwavering dedication to a mission greater than themselves.
