Welcome to Cumorah Academy, where fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork is just as important as academic achievement! Today, we delve into the exciting world of our student houses and the coveted House Cup competition.
The Power of Groups
At Cumorah Academy, we believe in the power of connection. That’s why students are placed into small groups on the first day, forming the foundation for a supportive network throughout the semester. These groups, named after revered figures from ancient scripture, are more than just classmates—they’re a family.
Meet the Houses: Where Legends Come Alive
Our five houses each have a distinct color and embody the spirit of their namesake:
- Esther House (Sky Blue): Channeling courage and inspiration, these students find strength in Esther’s bravery.
- Isaiah House (Red): Marked by fiery passion, Isaiah House disciples, like the prophet himself, strive to comprehend the divine.
- Moroni House (Blue): Loyal to the blue hues of the priesthood, Moroni House carries the torch of truth, just like Captain Moroni.
- Nephi House (Green): Their spirit echoes in the verdant Promised Land, mirroring Nephi’s unwavering pursuit of truth.
- Ruth House (Gold): Bearing the golden bounty of the harvest, Ruth House students embody resilience, overcoming challenges with unwavering determination.
The House Cup: A Celebration of Teamwork and Achievement
The semester culminates in the much-anticipated House Cup competition. This coveted silver trophy, adorned with the Academy seal, is a symbol of campus pride. Throughout the semester, houses earn points for various activities that showcase their strengths and commitment to the Cumorah Academy spirit.
The house with the most points wins the House Cup at the end of the semester (and all the candies inside).
Beyond the Classroom: Earning House Cup Points
Earning House Cup points goes beyond just academics. Here’s where students can truly shine:
- Academic Excellence: Top marks on tests, exceptional projects, and consistent participation in class all contribute valuable points.
- Community/Campus Service: Giving back to the community through volunteer work demonstrates the core values of the Academy and earns points for the house.
- House Events: Throughout the semester, there will be special activities and events like sports or games, which can also lead to House Cup points.
Every Point Counts: The Grand Finale
Every point counts, and the competition can be fierce! The house with the most points at the end of the semester gets to claim the coveted House Cup. The cup will be filled to the brim with candy for the house to share and will adorn the winning team’s colors throughout the next semester.
The real prize is much more valuable: the camaraderie, teamwork skills, and lifelong memories forged through friendly competition.
The Heart of the House System
While the House Cup adds a touch of friendly competition, the true value lies in the journey. The system fosters a sense of belonging, encouraging students to support and learn from one another. The points system simply recognizes and celebrates the positive behaviors that contribute to a thriving community: teamwork, service, and a love of learning.
Building Bonds Within Your House
The houses are more than just competitors; they are families! Throughout the semester, there are dedicated times for house members to connect and build strong bonds.
- Group Meetings and Home Evenings: Every Monday, house groups gather for a meeting. They plan their community service project for the semester, discuss upcoming events, and bond through spiritual activities. Every Monday night, there are home evenings involving lessons, stories, music, and games designed to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of unity within the house.
- Team-Building Thursdays: Thursdays are dedicated to team-building activities. These fun and engaging sessions, led by student leaders, help house members develop trust, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a team. From physical challenges to problem-solving exercises, these activities are a great way to bond and prepare for future successes, both within the house and beyond.
- Group Service Projects: Once per semester, each house has the opportunity to complete a “Service Project,” which is a service project in the community. This helps Cumorah Academy become more involved with the community, and gives the houses an opportunity to grow, learn, and serve together.
Besides these, there are many more opportunities throughout the semester to hang out with your group members and get to know them. Your house is full of friends and people who are here to help you with your studies and your semester. They are a big part of what makes Cumorah Academy great!
