A Journey of Love, Learning, and Service: Karen and Kent’s Story

Life is a series of intertwined moments, each leading us to places we never imagined. For Karen and Kent, their journey together began at a bank computer center, where they were colleagues and friends sharing stories about college and dates. “One day, Kent’s friend needed a double date partner, so he asked me,” Karen recalls. Their first date? Seeing the very first Star Wars movie—a galaxy far, far away marked the beginning of a lifelong adventure.

In October 1977, they married in the Ogden Temple, embarking on a new chapter filled with love, growth, and family. Together, they raised six children, who are now happily married, and delight in their 22 grandchildren.

Education and Career Paths

Kent’s academic journey led him to BYU Provo for a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in Western American History from Weber State. Karen’s path took a different turn. She paused her college education to focus on starting a family but later returned to earn an associate’s degree. “The timing was perfect,” Karen shares. “I learned Excel spreadsheets, and that knowledge proved invaluable during our mission to the Philippines.”

Discovering Cumorah Academy

The couple learned about Cumorah Academy through a long-time friend, Kelly Shepard. “She’s in charge of the curriculum here,” Kent explains. “When she told us about it, I was immediately drawn to this.” Karen initially hesitated but soon embraced the opportunity to serve in a different capacity.

Cumorah Academy’s inclusive environment intrigued them. “It’s not exclusive to church members,” Kent notes. “I love the idea of helping others grow, regardless of their background.” With decades of experience teaching young adults and teenagers, the advisory role at Cumorah felt like a natural fit. “We interview students, encourage them to create a life vision, and teach personal finance,” Karen says. “It’s incredibly rewarding.”

A Shared Vision of Service

Service is the cornerstone of Karen and Kent’s life vision. For Karen, it’s about being guided by the Spirit to serve wherever she’s needed. “Whether it’s in my ward or abroad, I just want to serve,” she reflects. For Kent, his calling to teach began after his full-time mission. “It felt like an extension of missionary work,” he shares. “Our goal has always been to serve where the Lord needs us. That’s why we’ve embraced missions and opportunities like Cumorah Academy.”

Looking ahead, they envision continuing their service—whether in the temple, on missions, or in their local community. “We’re committed to doing what others may not be able to, due to health or other limitations,” Karen says. “If the Lord calls us to Africa, we’ll go.”

Finding Hope in Challenges

Life isn’t without its trials, but Karen and Kent have found ways to navigate them with grace. Kent’s approach involves reflection. “I ask myself three questions: Did I cause this? Is it a result of someone else’s choice? Or is it something God wants me to experience?” This process helps him address challenges without dwelling on them.

Karen’s method centers on gratitude. “When I feel hopeless, I write down tender mercies I see daily,” she shares. “It reminds me that God is always aware of me. My granddaughter recently wrote, ‘Every day, look for God, because every day He’s looking for you.’ That wisdom keeps me grounded.”

A Legacy of Love and Learning

Karen and Kent’s story is a testament to the power of shared vision, faith, and a commitment to growth. From their beginnings at a bank to their current role at Cumorah Academy, they’ve embraced every opportunity to serve and inspire others. “Getting to know people from all over the world and hearing their stories is such a blessing,” Karen says.

Their journey continues, filled with hope, love, and an unwavering dedication to making a difference—wherever the Lord leads them next.
