Moroni Group: Service Project

At Cumorah Academy, students are divided into groups. You will spend a lot of time in these groups, doing team-building activities, getting to know each other, and competing for the House Cup. One activity students do within their groups is called a “Service Project.”

“Service Projects” are service projects done in the community around Cumorah Academy. It is one way we reach out to our community and try to make a positive impact on the lives around us. Serving in this way holds significant importance as it aligns with the teachings of Christ, who exemplified the highest standards of service and compassion.

By following His example, we strive to selflessly assist those in need, promote goodwill, and foster a spirit of unity and love within our community. This commitment to serving as Christ not only enriches the lives of those we help but also strengthens our faith and character.

This week students from the Moroni house had their group Service Project. Moroni group members traveled to Vlašim to teach English to young adults at a business high school there.

Victoriia from Ukraine said,  “It was an incredible experience to teach Czech youth English and inspire them to travel by our example.  I am grateful for this opportunity!”

Teaching English

The project saw the Moroni Group divided into three teams, each facing a class of 12-15 young adults, eager to enhance their English language skills.  These students, on the cusp of higher education or professional careers, were eager to learn from the Moroni group.

The Moroni Group crafted their lessons with a specific focus: empowering their Czech counterparts with the tools to navigate the world with confidence.

The Moroni group focused on teaching everything to do with travel. They taught common travel terms in English, how to navigate unfamiliar streets, and how to order delicious meals in English.

Forget boring lectures! The Moroni Group knew the key to keeping things interesting was to make learning fun. The Moroni group played a lot of games with their groups, including Jeopardy, Kahoot, Simon Says, and Charades. They role-played with students, pretending to order food and asking for directions.

Learning Together

The project wasn’t just about the Business School students acquiring English skills. The Moroni Group members themselves gained valuable experience in communication, lesson planning, and cultural exchange.

Students in the Moroni group honed their communication skills, got experience planning lessons, and experienced the joy of cultural exchange firsthand.

Some of the students in the Moroni group are themselves taking English classes here at Cumorah Academy. This project gave them a chance to practice their English and learn with the students.

Adelina from Albania said,  “It was a special experience. At first, I found it difficult because the students had a good level of language, and almost everything was very easy for them. But after the first break of the ice, we felt almost good, all of them behaved with great sportsmanship and I, too, after breaking the ice, it’s not like I was more tense or anything like that. In total we had only 12 students and all of them studied English and business.”

Building Bridges, One Lesson At a Time

The Moroni Group’s Service project is a perfect example of how language learning can be more than memorizing vocabulary. It’s about breaking down barriers, creating connections, and understanding each other better. Through fun lessons and cultural exchange, both the Moroni Group and the Business School students had a chance to learn and grow together, one lesson at a time.

Vitor from Brazil said “It was a wonderful experience to get to know the teenagers of Czech Republic and share knowledge and spend a good time with them. It’s very interesting to share our cultures with each other. I love that!”
